Doctors perform a medical procedure called anoscopy using an anoscope. It is a harmless process that checks the anal and rectal tissues for the above-mentioned diseases. You can perform an anoscope the following way on a patient:
- Ask the patient to empty their bladder and digestive tract before the exam.
- Prescribe a laxative or enema for constipated patients.
- Ask the patient to lie down and relax.
- Put the patient in either a fetal or bending-over position.
- Lubricate the anoscope with K-Y jelly or another lubricant.
- Insert the anoscope very carefully in the patient’s anus.
- Ask them to tense and relax their muscles for smooth insertion.
- Use the light to observe the anus and rectum for any abscess, fissure, or swelling.
- Based on your observations, you can further perform a rectal exam or biopsy.
